Operations Coordinator – Part-time (50%) position for a one-year term, with the possibility of the role being extended beyond the end of the term.

About Ostomy Halifax Society

Ostomy Halifax Society (OHS) is a registered charitable organization dedicated to all people living with an ostomy and their families, helping those directly impacted live life to the fullest by offering relevant support, education, collaboration, and communication. Our programming pillars include: 10 in-person meetings for members annually, a hospital visitation program, and a youth camp program funded by the society. Additionally, we hold special events to raise money, to increase education and bolster awareness throughout the year.

In 2023 OHS celebrated its 50th year helping Nova Scotians who have had life-saving ostomy surgery. For the first 50 years of our existence, we have been entirely run by a vibrant volunteer base that has consistently delivered our programming. The Operations Coordinator position will be the society’s first employee.

Position Highlights

The successful candidate will report to the President and assist the Executive Team and OHS volunteers in delivering our programming and fulfilling our mission. This is a position for an organized, energetic, and flexible person who would like to make an important impact in the lives of Nova Scotian ostomates and their families. Duties will be broadly split between administrative activities and participation in, and the coordination of OHS events. This will be a work from home position in that OHS does not have a physical office. The successful candidate must have a valid driver’s licence and be willing to use their own vehicle to travel to and from OHS events. You will work 20 hours per week and be expected to attend meetings and events, which often take place on weekends and evenings to accommodate volunteer schedules.

Responsibilities

Your main areas of responsibilities as Operations Coordinator will include but are not limited to:

● Overall coordination of OHS events – monthly in-person meetings of members, and special events such as: our annual auction to send young people to camp, Step Up for Ostomy (a national fund raiser for Ostomy Canada Society), fairs and education events.

● Collaborating with the Executive team to identify, recruit, and oversee volunteers to assist in the support of programming and special events.

● Working with the Executive to find and attract relevant guest speakers for our general monthly meeting and other special events.

● Attending and participating in our nine annual Executive/Business team meeting and any additional special meetings or Committee meetings as needed.

● Build your personal knowledge with respect to the society’s programming so you may communicate and advocate for our mission with all stakeholders internal or external to the society.

● Assist committee chairs as needed to execute the mission of the society – with an early focus on supporting those responsible for our youth camp and hospital visitation programming.

● Using the flexibility of the position and your own strengths to maximize both your contribution and your enjoyment for the work by making the position your own.

Ideal Candidate

You are an organized person who enjoys helping others cope and excel in life. You may work or may have worked as a volunteer or an administrator in a charitable organization, where you gained experience with all operational aspects – you knew what needed to be done and regularly jumped in as needed to do it. You know the value in attracting volunteers and supporting them in their work on projects they are passionate about. You are flexible in your thinking and approach and know even the best laid plans will change. You also appreciate that having a plan makes everything work better even when it must be changed.

You are collaborative and you like people and building relationships.

Comfortable with Google Suite, Microsoft Office and other digital tools is considered a definite asset.

Compensation
